چکیده

Sleep is a key process in neurodevelopment and essential for the maturation of fundamental brain functions. Premature birth can disturb initial steps sleep maturation, which may contribute to impairment neurodevelopment. It thus understand various states quality cerebral function each vigilance state, as well development cyclicity, at-risk neonatal infants, particularly those born premature. The objective this review provide precise description cycles their rhythmic organization premature term newborns according gestational age. Technical aspects polysomnography, requires high level expertise neonates, are also described. Principles visual interpretation including simultaneous analysis behavioral (spontaneous motricity eye movements), polysomnographic parameters (electro-oculogram, electrocardiogram, respiration), electroencephalography patterns presented. neurophysiology ontogenesis its interaction with discussed, highlighting crucial role duration newborns. In particular, involvement myoclonic twitches functional connectivity sensorimotor discussed. Indeed, quality, determined by combined parameters, reflects either normal or pathological developmental processes during period. place neurophysiological explorations early detection disorders potential consequences on neurodevelopmental care improve prevention impairment.

Brain State Differentiation and Behavioral Inflexibility in Autism.

Autism spectrum disorders (ASDs) are characterized by social impairments alongside cognitive and behavioral inflexibility. While social deficits in ASDs have extensively been characterized, the neurobiological basis of inflexibility and its relation to core clinical symptoms of the disorder are unknown. We acquired functional neuroimaging data from 2 cohorts, each consisting of 17 children with...

Sleep State Switching

We take for granted the ability to fall asleep or to snap out of sleep into wakefulness, but these changes in behavioral state require specific switching mechanisms in the brain that allow well-defined state transitions. In this review, we examine the basic circuitry underlying the regulation of sleep and wakefulness and discuss a theoretical framework wherein the interactions between reciproca...

Integrated Information and State Differentiation

Integrated information (Φ) is a measure of the cause-effect power of a physical system. This paper investigates the relationship between Φ as defined in Integrated Information Theory and state differentiation ([Formula: see text]), the number of, and difference between potential system states. Here we provide theoretical justification of the relationship between Φ and [Formula: see text], then ...

Load compensation as a function of state during sleep onset.

Ventilation decreases and airway resistance increases with the loss of electroencephalogram alpha activity at sleep onset. The aim of this study was to determine whether reflexive load compensation is lost immediately on the loss of alpha activity. Six healthy male subjects were studied under two conditions (load and control-no load), in three states (continuous alpha, continuous theta, and imm...
